Major Retired Ida Weiner


After attending the University of Texas ROTC program in El Paso, Ida Weiner was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in July of 1980 at age 23. As a newly promoted captain, Ida finished her Advanced Intelligence Officers course at Fort Huachuca, Arizona before heading to Fort Benning, Georgia in 1985 to become Airborne qualified.

Ida commanded a Military Intelligence company with VII Corps during her first of three German overseas tours in 1988.  Ida then served at Fort Bliss, Texas as captain of the 11th Air Defense Brigade in late 1990 and early 1991. During Operation Desert Shield and during Operation Desert Storm Combat Operations, Ida proudly served as the U.S. Army’s first female Air Defense Brigade Intelligence officer. Ida was recognized for her Desert Storm service by earning the Bronze Star.

As a major, Ida served with VII Corps in Germany as a Brigade counter intelligence staff officer in 1993. She soon deployed again for three tours with a NATO Joint Task Force as the Joint Intelligence Officer (J2) in Zagreb, Croatia and as the Senior Intelligence officer with the Joint NATO command in Naples, Italy in 1995-1996. Ida completed her twenty-year active duty service career serving as an Inspector General for the U.S. Army Reserve Command at Fort McPherson, Georgia.

Ida has served more than five years as an active member in good standing with the Clayton County Master Gardener Group. During her tenure, she also served as a board member (corresponding secretary) of the Clayton County Master Garners Group from 2016 through 2018.

Ida makes an exceptional difference for foster children in Clayton County by serving as a credentialed Clayton County court-appointed special advocate. Ida has actively been serving with the Clayton County Humane Society since 2015. Ida teaches children and adults basic swim skills with the Swimmerman Swim School in Clayton County. Ida also serves as a core and founding member of Clayton County’s Armed Forces Senior Veterans.

Ida and her husband of 35 years (a retired U.S. Army soldier) Wes Weiner have made Jonesboro, Clayton County their home since August 1996.
