Board Meeting Information

Business Meeting Procedures and Commonly Asked Questions

One of the best ways to learn what is happening in your county is by attending a Board of Commissioners Business Meeting. During these meetings, the board considers items ranging from budgetary issues to road issues, to grants and local programs. The Clayton County Board of Commissioners encourages citizens to attend Business Meetings so that they can get to know who their commissioners are and understand what is going on with their county government.

When are Business Meetings held and are they open to the public?

Pursuant to Ordinance 2023-219, adopted by the Clayton County Board of Commissioners on October 17, 2023, the Board of Commissioners will hold regular meetings on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in its Boardroom located at 112 Smith Street, Jonesboro, Georgia, unless postponed to a subsequent date by action taken at a regular meeting. Meetings shall be open to the public. The Board of Commissioners may also hold such additional meetings as shall be necessary. Whenever any regular meeting of the Board shall fall on a holiday, the meeting shall be held on the following day. The Committee of Whole (Work Sessions) will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.  All zoning meetings shall be conducted at night beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Zoning Meetings: The Board of Commissioners shall consider zoning matters as part of the Board’s Agenda of its regular meeting held on the third Tuesday of each month.

Changes in the scheduling of any of the above meetings or notifications of Special Called Meetings will be posted at least 24 hours in advance.

All meetings are open to the public, except for those occasions involving matters that are specifically exempt by the Georgia Open Meetings Law.

Who determines what is placed on the agenda?

The agenda is approved by the Clayton County Board of Commissioners Chair and prepared and published by the Clerk. The deadline for getting an approved item placed on the agenda is scheduled through the BOC Approval System, which is managed through the COO’s office. Anyone requesting approval of an item to be placed on an upcoming agenda should contact the Clerk at (770) 473-5744, or the COO’s Assistant at (770) 477-3215. Anyone approved for addition to the agenda must provide written documentation on the issue by the deadline.

Can a citizen address the Board of Commissioners during a Business Meeting without already being on the official meeting agenda?

The Board welcomes public comment; however, to manage available time, public comment will be limited to two (2) minutes per speaker at each regular business meeting of the Board of Commissioners. In no event shall the public comment period last longer than twenty (20) minutes at any single meeting. At the end of the twenty (20) minute public comment period, if any member of the public who has signed up to speak has not been reached, that person shall have the right to be carried forward to the next regular meeting of the Board and shall be placed at the top of the list at that meeting. Any member of the public wishing to make comment must sign the public comment sign-up sheet in the Boardroom prior to the 6:00 p.m. meeting.
