Commissioner Sonna Gregory presented with a community service award from a local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. named in honor of past Fayette County Commissioner

(March 1, 2018) Jonesboro- Clayton County Commissioner Sonna Gregory (District 1) was recently awarded the Pota E. Costen Trailblazer Award by the East Point/College Park Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The award recognizes a member of the chapter that has demonstrated exemplary achievement in the area of Social Action.

Pota Costen, who was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta retired from the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Business Division in 2008 after a 29 year career in federal law enforcement. It was in November of 2014 that Costen changed local political landscape as the first African-American woman to be elected to a county public office as a County Commissioner in Fayette County, GA. Unfortunately, shortly after winning her commission seat the trailblazer died after a five-month battle with breast cancer.

“I am more excited than I can express at the honor of receiving the Pota E. Coston Trailblazer Award”, said Commissioner Gregory. “Pota’s commitment to the community was an example that we should all work to mimic in our public service life. Just as in another area of Pota’s legacy, I too have dealt with cancer and it is her journey that inspires me daily to offer a greater service the community.”

As a County Commissioner, Gregory has been diligently serving the residents of Clayton for over a decade. It is through her exemplary service of impacting and improving the quality of life of Clayton County residents that she was awarded the prestigious honor. Over the years Commissioner Gregory has successfully incorporated Delta Sigma Theta’s Five Point Program Thrust of educational development, economic development, political awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and international awareness and involvement into her community service platform as an elected public servant.
