NEWS RELEASE
State-of-the Art Clayton County Fire Headquarters and
Fire Station No. 1 Groundbreaking Ceremony
(Clayton County, GA) —Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services (CCFES) is preparing to break ground on a new state-of-the art Fire Headquarters at 6345 Garden Walk Blvd., and a replacement facility for Fire Station No. 1, 6355 Garden Walk Blvd., in Riverdale, GA 30274. Clayton County District 2 Commissioner Gail Hambrick and the CCFES will host the Groundbreaking Ceremony on Wed., Dec. 4, 2024, 11:30 a.m.
The new two-story, 19,839-sq. ft. Fire Headquarters is a replacement for the current CCFES administration building in Riverdale. The $11.4 million facility is paid for by the Fire Fund Capital Reserve Revenue. Since the original facility opened in 1990, the organization has more than tripled in size.
“In addition to office and meeting spaces, the Fire Headquarters will house a first of its kind clinic staffed with doctors, nurse practitioners, and paramedics to mentally and physically treat all 451 fire department personnel,” said Deputy Chief Operating Officer Landry Merkison.
The new 3-bay, 10,689-sq. ft. Fire Station No. 1 will replace the current 38-year-old building. The $7.2 million project is funded by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).
“Fire Station No. 1 has served the citizens of Clayton County for more than 38 years without any major
renovations,” said Interim Fire Chief Tim Sweat. “The facility will become the department’s logistical hub for equipment and vehicles.”
The new buildings will be constructed next to each other and built concurrently.
“This is an investment in our employees who work 24-7-365,” added Chief Sweat. “The health and wellness of our staff is of the utmost importance. The clinic will serve those who care for our community.”

Since 2004, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners has used the one-cent SPLOST for countywide
improvements. The Clayton County SPLOST helps to move our county forward by funding capital
improvements within infrastructure, public safety, buildings, technology, and overall quality of life.
