Books Not Bullets Literacy Initiative
Solicitor-General Charles Brooks and Dr. Deatrice Haney Continue Partnership to end School Violence
(Jonesboro, GA) Clayton County Solicitor-General, Charles A. Brooks, is pleased to announce a new campaign to end school gun violence in partnership with Clayton County Public Schools Board of Education member, Dr. Deatrice “Dee” Haney, (District 5). The campaign is a literacy initiative titled “Books not Bullets: Books not Violence” open to all Clayton County Public Schools second graders. This new reading initiative is designed as a competition among all second-grade classes in Clayton County Public Schools to read as many books as possible between November 7, 2022 and January 6, 2022. The winning class will be announced on January 27, 2022 and awarded a class set of Amazon Kids Kindle reader tablets with a 1-year subscription to download additional books for their reading pleasure.
“The goal of this competition is to equip our young readers with the greatest ammunition on earth, more powerful than any bullet, knowledge. The adage knowledge is power is more than a cliché and if we are able to ignite a thirst for knowledge early on with our young readers and spark their imaginations with the worlds to be seen through the power of reading, then we might be able to keep our kids reaching for books, not guns, and ultimate out of the criminal justice system,” said Brooks when asked about why this initiative is important to his work as Solicitor-General.
