Clayton County GIS Celebrates GIS Day

(Clayton County, GA) —Clayton County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will celebrate GIS Day the week of Nov. 18-22, 2024. The staff will share innovative applications of GIS technology in analysis, visualization, gaining insights into geospatial data, and thought leadership in local government.

In November, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners will join hundreds of organizations worldwide to host gatherings to celebrate the impactful work of GIS professionals and future innovators who will further advance global progress using GIS. Events and engagement opportunities include, but are not limited to:

• GIS Day Expo, Presentation, and Drone Demonstration

  Nov. 20, 2024 (1 p.m. – 3 p.m.)

• GIS Web Application Development Workshop – Not Open to the Public
  (Morrow High School, 4930 Steele Road., Ellenwood, GA 30294)
  Nov. 22, 2024

Over 20 years ago, Jack Dangermond, the founder and president of Environmental System Research Institute (Esri), envisioned people collaborating and sharing how GIS affects everyone. This led to the establishment of GIS Day, which was first observed in 1999.

“GIS and geospatial data have tremendously improved our day-to-day lives, including numerous enhancements to the critical services we provide to the Clayton County community,” said Chandler White, GIS Technical Coordinator with Clayton County Information Technology. “The importance of understanding the unique position Clayton County occupies in the Metro region and the world at large is necessary for planning a better tomorrow.”

In anticipation of GIS Day, Jaime Montalvo, Chief Information Officer for Clayton County, remarked, “The power of GIS to transform data into actionable insights is invaluable for our county’s strategic planning. With GIS, we can map out effective solutions and proactively address the needs of our residents. It’s a crucial tool that allows us to innovate and improve our service delivery.”
