What is the difference between the county prison and the county jail?

The Clayton County Prison is run by the Clayton County Corrections Department and houses only convicted state inmates. The inmates fall under the regulatory authority of the Georgia Department of Corrections. The Clayton County Jail is run by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and houses adult pre-trial detention inmates before they are tried sentenced in court.

How do I get to the prison?

Traveling I-75 North
Take Exit 221 (Jonesboro Road)
Turn left at traffic light

Traveling I-75 South
Take Exit 221 (Jonesboro Road)
Turn right at traffic light

Travel for seven to eight miles
Turn left on East Lovejoy Road *(Shell Gas Station on left)
At traffic light, turn left on Hastings Bridge Road *(Dollar General is across the street)
Go through one traffic light *(In front of County Landfill)
The next street (to your left) will be SLR Blvd. Turn left on to SLR Blvd. The road will dead end at the Clayton County Prison.

When can I visit the prison?

The Clayton County Prison allows approved visitors to see their loved ones. Visitation hours are every Saturday and Sunday, as well as holidays. Visitation begins at 9:00 AM and stops at 10:15 AM the institutional counting of inmates. Visitation resumes at 11:00 AM and ends promptly at 1:00 PM.

Can I get an offender moved closer to me or farther away from my community?

Inmates of this facility belong to the State of Georgia and are assigned to our care. If you are attempting to have an inmate moved closer to you, you should have the inmate make the request to his counselor in the prison. If you are trying to have the offender moved farther away, you should contact the Georgia Department of Corrections Office of Ombudsman and Family Advocacy at 478-992-5358.
