Week," beginning March 19, 2012. The program seeks to recognize
those who are making significant contributions to the Atlanta

County Vice Chairman Wole Ralph Advises President Obama on Local
Issues for State of the Union Address
Jonesboro, GA
- Clayton County Vice Chairman Wole Ralph joined a select group of
young leaders to advise President Barack Obama on his State of the
Union Address to be delivered on January 24, 2012. Hosts of the
event included Danielle Gray, Deputy Assistant to the President for
Economic Policy, and Jon Carson, Deputy Assistant to the
President/Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement.
President Obama's remarks during his speech in Osawatomie, Kansas,
on rebuilding the economy "based on fair play, a fair shot, and a
fair share" were used as the basis for discussion. Vice Chairman
Ralph provided real-life stories from real Clayton County residents
that highlighted these themes.

County Parks and Recreation Earns National Park Accreditation
Jonesboro, GA - The National Recreation and
Park Association (NRPA) recently announced that Clayton County
Parks and Recreation became one of only 104 park and recreation
agencies nation-wide accredited by the Commission for Accreditation
of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) in 2011. This distinguished
accomplishment was announced during the NRPA 2011 Annual Conference
that was held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Commissioners Honor Callaway Elementary Principal
Jonesboro-
Recently during a December Business Meeting Clayton County Board of
Commissioners (CCBOC) proudly honored Callaway Elementary Principal
Marcus Fuller with a proclamation for his fast thinking and heroic
act. Principal Fuller quickly responded and possibly saved the life
of a student from Mundy's Mill High School who was stuck down by a
vehicle while crossing S.R. 54 on his way to school the morning of
Tuesday, October 11, 2011. The young man was left in the road by
the driver of the vehicle. Fuller placed his own vehicle in the
middle of the road to block off the lane in order to help shield
the student's body from other vehicles travelling S.R. 54 until
medical assistance could arrive.

Community Walkability Study Expert Holds Workshop In Clayton

- Clayton County Senior Services Department recently partnered with
the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), the city of Morrow and the
Georgia Chapter of AARP and hosted a workshop to review the city of
Morrow's live and walk environment for older residents. The
presenters of the workshop were from the Walkable and Liveable
Communities (WALC) Institute.

Resident
Jonesboro -
Commissioner Gail B. Hambrick, District 2, was recently invited to
the 107th birthday of Clayton County resident, Mrs. Maggie Brown
Kidd. Mrs. Kidd was born in Stephens, Georgia, on December 7, 1904.
Believed to be the county's oldest living resident, Mrs. Kidd
resides in Riverdale, GA with her daughter and son-in-law.

County to Host Walkability Study
Jonesboro - Clayton County Senior Services
Department has partnered with the Atlanta Regional Commission
(ARC), the city of Morrow and the Georgia Chapter of AARP to hold a
workshop to study the county and specifically the city of Morrow's
live and walk atmosphere for older residents. The study will take
place on Thursday, December 1, 2011, starting with an 8:30am
registration at The National Archives in Morrow, located at 5780
Jonesboro Road in Morrow, GA. Various local community stakeholders
have been invited to participate in the study which will have a
vital role in the Clayton County Lifelong Communities
Initiative.

S.P.A.R.C. "One-Stop Shop" A SUCCESS!
Clayton County seniors treated to free health
screenings, fresh fruit and fun during annual health and wellness
event
From
foot exams to safety tips, nearly a thousand Clayton County Seniors
turned out on October 14 at the Frank Bailey Senior Center and on
October 28 at the J.Charley Griswell Senior Center to receive free
life saving information. Clayton County Senior Services held their
annual "One Stop Shop for Wellness" Sickness and Prevention
Achieved through Regional Collaboration (S.P.A.R.C.) events. In
addition to free health screenings, seniors could also receive flu
and tetanus immunization on site from a community health partner.
As an added bonus seniors who visited at least five of the vendor
tables received a variety of fruits and vegetables to take home and
enjoy.

Singleton visited the Ambaji USA Temple of Atlanta during its
annual Diwali celebration on Thursday, October 27, 2011, at its
headquarters location in Lake City, Georgia. The Commissioners took
the opportunity to embrace one of the many cultures represented in
Clayton County and to learn more about this significant Indian
holiday. The Ambaji USA Temple provides food and offers seminars
with free medical consultations to the community in Clayton County
and surrounding areas.

Commissioner Singleton Joins County Agencies Representatives During
Emergency Preparedness Table Top Exercise
On Friday, October
14 - Clayton County Emergency Management Agency conducted
a "Table Top Exercise" at the Carl Rhodenizer Recreation Center on
Rex Road. The purpose of the exercise was to provide opportunities
for applied training when responding to an emergency involving the
recreation center and to develop better understanding of the
emergency plans that are already in place. Experience and data show
that exercises are a practical, efficient, and cost-effective way
for communities to prepare for disasters.

- Announcing a Proposed Property Tax
Increase
Jonesboro-The Clayton County Board of
Commissioners today announces its intention to increase the
property taxes it will levy this year over the rollback rate for
the County's maintenance and operations (M&O). The County's
General Fund gross millage will increase to 20.953 mills; net
M&O millage will increase from 11.327 mills to 15.813 mills;
and the Fire District net M&O millage will increase from 3.900
mills to 4.400 mills. The gross millage increase of 4.5 mills has
been necessitated by a drop in residential, commercial and
industrial values as well as a decline in construction related
revenues and local option sales tax collections.

County Water Authority's (CCWA) reservoir areas and Newman Wetlands
Center are a great option for families looking for inexpensive
outdoor fun for the upcoming 4th of July weekend.
The Blalock and Shamrock Reservoirs, which are located at 2610
Shamrock Road (off of Freeman Road) in Jonesboro, will be open
Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.
The J. W. Smith Reservoir, which is located at 143 Northbridge
Road in Hampton, will also be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from

second year with the Clayton State University School of Business
Alumni Association to host a Community Beautification Day at

JONESBORO, GA - The Clayton
County GrassRoots Leadership Institute (GRLI) has extended the
application deadline for its 2011 training program until Friday,
June 24, 2011.
GRLI's skill development sessions include: understanding
leadership, effective communication, conducting successful
meetings, building partnerships and collaborations, conflict
resolution, group decision making/problem solving, understanding
poverty issues, and understanding diversity. Classes will be taught
by local government and economic development community leaders.

- Georgia DOT Announces New
Transportation Enhancement Awards
Jonesboro - Georgia Department of
Transportation recently announced that Clayton County would receive
a grant for $300,000.00 for a landscape and beautification project
near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in
Congressional District 5 entitled "A New Front Door for the World's
Busiest Airport," along with a $250,000.00 award for the Jesters
Creek Trail Enhancement project located in Congressional District
13. The two projects combined received a total of $550,000.00 in
Transportation Enhancement (TE) funding for the county. With more
than $200 million in requests submitted statewide, the State
Transportation Board members selected just over 144 projects to
fund, totaling approximately $55 million.
