Programs Development and Services Department
The goal of the Programs Department is to develop, administer and align programs and services with the overall mission of the office of the District Attorney, Clayton Judicial Circuit. The programs are aimed at offering an alternative to the normal court process, provide guidance and services to defendants and assist victims and the community. Initiatives have been spearheaded by the District Attorney that are bound for educating our community and being proactive in the lives of the Clayton County citizens.
Programs and Initiatives
Pretrial Intervention & Diversion Program:
Offering An Alternative to Court, Providing Resources
The program is designed to meet the needs of certain nonviolent offenders in an attempt to deter their future criminal behavior and to minimize loss to victims of these crimes through payment of restitution by the offender. The program also serves the courts by reducing the numbers of less serious cases, permitting more time for the more serious crimes and to protect the community by closely supervising the accused following the arrest until final disposition of the case.
Law Related Educational Workshop:
Education and Information About What Really Happens
The Law Related Educational Workshop provides valuable information about the Law that dispels the myths often associated with offenses and the consequences for committing the offenses. This program is initiated in-house as well as in the community. Correlations between educational obtainment, income levels and incarceration rates are highlighted. Nationwide, 75 percent of all incarcerated individuals have dropped out of high school. A high school graduate will make over $1 million dollars more over their lifetime earnings than a drop out.
Invest In Our Community Initiative:
Create Tomorrow's Leaders!
Understanding that youth that are in trouble with the law are often mislead and uninformed the District Attorney's Office collaborates with other agencies to create events and workshops.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Several initiatives will be placed throughout the county within the month of October to bring about awareness in our communities. This film will not only act as our initiative, but aid as an ongoing educational tool. This was a collaborative effort. Let's stop the cycle and speak against anyone committing the act of Domestic Violence.
Domestic Violence...Not Even Once
Anti-Armed Robbery Initiative: To engage youth in the criminal justice process the District Attorney held a poster contest to depict an armed robbery scene with the caption of the mandatory minimum 10 year sentence that many are not aware of. The winners have their art work displayed in schools, libraries, and other community venues to combat the criminal act. A script was then written by a local student and acted out by youth to act as one of the quarterly public service announcements.
Robbin in the Hood, Don't Do it.
Seasons Greetings Initiative: Understanding that many families are feeling the woes of the economy the District Attorney's Office reached out to families during the holiday seasons to provide much needed assistance. By collaborating with DFACS, Kinship Care and local law enforcement the families that were in need were identified. This also provided Pre-trial participants the opportunity to give back to the community by donating food for Thanksgiving , clothing, toys, and Christmas trees during Christmas and candy during Halloween. The participants felt good knowing they were assisting families in need and the families and collaborative agencies were extremely grateful.
